TOPIC: Nothing Is Impossible With God
READ: LUKE 1: 57-66 (NKJV)
Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son.
When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her.
So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias.
His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.”
But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
So they made signs to his father — what he would have him called.
And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled.
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue [loosed,] and he spoke, praising God.
Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea.
And all those who heard [them] kept [them] in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.
THE MESSAGE:
As we commemorate St. John the Baptist Day today, our devotion focuses on the miraculous events that surrounded his birth. In our text, people gathered to rejoice with the family of Zachariah for the birth of John the Baptist according to the word of the Lord, spoken through Angel Gabriel (verses 13-14, 19, 36). On the 8th day, they also gathered to circumcise him according to Jewish tradition. From the events of John the Baptist’s birth, we see that:
i. The birth of John the Baptist brought great testimony about the power ofGod.
ii. Zachariah and Elizabeth obeyed the word of God (verse 13), unlike Adam and Eve.
iii. Nothing is impossible for God to do (verse 37).
Indeed, the birth of John the Baptist to Zachariah and Elizabeth shows that nothing is impossible for God to do (verse 37). Beloved, are you at the verge of giving up because of what you are passing through? Do not lose hope in God. His timing is the best (Ecclesiastes 3: 11a). Go out today with this great assurance and the Lord will bless you.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, nothing is impossible for You to do. Remember me today as You did Zachariah and Elizabeth, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
